The 2025 Dunraven Welsh Young Singer of the Year Compèred by the wonderful Beverley Humphreys MBE, the audience was treated to a fantastic afternoon of music making at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff.
In front of a world-class panel of adjudicators featuring David Jackson OBE, artistic director of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World, Rebecca Evans CBE, the world-renowned Soprano, Dennis O’Niell CBE, the equally renowned tenor and Anthony Gabrielle, the internationally acclaimed orchestral conductor, each competitor in the 11-14 and 15-18 categories performed to a high standard with Isobel Hornsey successful in the younger category and Gwennan Jones in the senior age group. Both represented Cowbridge Comprehensive School and were presented with the trophies and £300 prize money each. The other finalists, Emmie Harris, Evie Williams, Felix Wren Owens and Isobel McMeechan each received £100 for their endeavours.
History was made in the Dunraven WYSOY final as, for the first time ever, the adjudicators announced joint winners! They were unable to separate Erin Rossington (Soprano) and Twm Tegid (Baritone), who, in the adjudicators’ opinion, performed to the highest standard and received high praise indeed from the illustrious panel, who also spoke highly of the 2 other finalists, John Liddington (Baritone) and Owain Rowlands (Bass/Baritone).
This was undoubtedly the best final in the competition’s history, and it proves that it is now one of the leading competitions in the principality.
Erin and Twm received £1,000 in prize money each, plus their respective trophies from David Brace OBE, the choir’s President, while John and Owain received £500 each.
In their closing statement, the panel paid a huge compliment to the quality of the Maesteg Gleemen, who started proceedings and entertained the audience during the adjudication, stating the control, diction and sound were outstanding. High praise indeed.
The choir are indebted to David and Dawn Brace for their continued support and incredible sponsorship of the competition and looks forward in anticipation of the 2026 Dunraven WYSOY, to be held on Sunday, June 7th at the RWCMD, the perfect venue for this wonderful event.
